When we think of a Learning Management System (LMS), we automatically jump to computer based training, online exams and leading safety indicators. Those are important aspects that improve training and safety outcomes. However, they tend to overshadow the far more utilitarian and immediate advantage:
the ability to resolve record keeping issues.
A significant amount of time and structure is devoted to keeping track of who is competent, who has been trained, what certificates are expiring, and other endless record keeping requirements. There is also a need to ensure that all records are correct and available for auditing purposes.
Despite this, many operators are still managing their recordkeeping with tools that are not up to task. Many use a combination of paper, email, excel and so on…none of which are optimized to provide good results.
Fortunately, there are purpose-built tools within LMSs to help with all this record keeping, both on-board and ashore.
